How to Feel Like the Main Character in Your Life

It’s easy enough to imagine yourself as the main character. But unless you’re dealing with very specific situations, you won’t face the same scenarios as our favorite protagonists (meaning, unfortunately, you won’t have a daring sword fight anytime soon). So, how does one actually get “main character energy”?

In addition to romanticizing your own life, you need to change your mindset and focus your energy on making positive changes in your life. Read on to learn just a few things you can do to start feeling like a main character.

Don’t let anyone or anything hold you back from your goals

Main characters have a lot of obstacles to deal with. But even when they are on the brink of despair, they manage to pick themselves up and find a way to overcome everything that is thrown at them. They don’t let anyone hold them back from reaching the end goal – whether it is saving the business from going under or saving the world from utter destruction. Your real life goals matter just as much as the ones your favorite fictional characters are trying to achieve. Don’t let obstacles or people become a roadblock to you. While you may not need to battle it out in real life, you can stand up for yourself when in a situation where someone is trying to take the credit for hard work you’ve done or they’re trying to bring you down with cruel words.

Don’t hold yourself back from your goals

Sometimes, it’s not just others that you’ll have a conflict with. Self-doubt, anxiety, and fear of failure can prevent us from taking the next step forward. Don’t hold yourself back from the things you want to do and take the right steps to address those feelings, whether it is gradually growing your confidence by attacking your goals in small pieces or speaking with a therapist to help work through things.

Spend time on things you enjoy

Coming this winter holiday: big city girl returns to her little hometown in the countryside to save the family business, relearns how to enjoy the hobbies of her youth, and finds true love in the span of a week. While our favorite Hallmark movies may seem a bit cheesy sometimes, I love the core message they often have of remembering your roots and focusing your energy on the things that truly make you happy. Find one or two things that make you happy, and make sure to spend time on them. It doesn’t matter if it’s something you can do every day for a full-time job or if it’s a hobby you incorporate into your schedule just a few times a week. Taking time for the things you enjoy truly can make every day a little better.

Get rid of the toxic people in your life

The protagonist of any story always deals with conflict to help with “character growth”, usually making them come into contact with a variety of toxic people. A cheating lover, the backstabbing best friend, the villain trying to take over the kingdom by killing off the royal family… But by the end of the storyline, the main character has moved on and that toxic character is no longer a part of their life. You too need to cut toxic people out of your life and make connections with others that will cheer you on as you work toward accomplishing your dreams.

Oh, and while many shows and books may like to give their antagonists a redemption arc, not everyone is deserving of it. So don’t feel like you need to give second chances to people just because they seem to have turned over a new leaf.

Know your limits

When the main character tries to take on everything by themselves, things can quickly fall apart – especially if what they’re doing is a secret from everyone else. It’s important that they learn their limits and know when to ask for help. That can be just finding a friend to confide in to bringing in another superhero to help save the world. Likewise, if you ever feel overwhelmed or are stumped on what to do, don’t feel afraid to reach out for help. It doesn’t make you any less amazing. On the other hand, make sure you know your limits so that you don’t take on too much. If you’re already overwhelmed with school or work or life in general, it’s okay to say no. After all, you can’t have your “happily ever after” if you aren’t living for yourself and just live to help others.

Wear clothes that help you feel confident

As a self-proclaimed fashionista, I love getting to learn about the different types of clothes that characters wear – from comfy adventure outfits to dazzling ball gowns to protective armor. Everyone in books, movies, and real life has a unique style that fits them. Wearing clothes they feel comfortable in helps them feel more confident – and that’s something that holds true for you and me, too. In fact, I have certain power colors and favorite clothes that I like to wear for special events or when I have an important meeting. They help me feel like I can do anything. If you want to feel like the main character, sometimes just throwing on your favorite outfit helps get you into the right mindset.
